Georgia's parliament Saturday approved a request by President Mikhail Saakashvili's to impose a "state of war," as the conflict between Georgia and Russia escalated, Georgian officials said.
Georgian reservists prepare ammunition before going to front line in the northern Georgian town of Gori.

A burning appartment building, damaged by a Russian airstrike is seen the northern Georgian town of Gori.

Saakashvili accused Russia of launching an unprovoked full-scale military attack against his country, including targeting civilian homes, while Russian officials insist their troops were protecting people from Georgia's attacks on South Ossetia, a breakaway Georgian region that borders Russia.

Russia's Interfax news agency said the death toll was at least 2,000 killed in the capital of South Ossetia and claimed the city has been destroyed.

Separatist-backed South Ossetian sources reported that about 1,600 people have died and 90 have been wounded in provincial capital Tskhinvali since Russian forces entered the territory Thursday.

I don't care what anyone says... War is stupid and unnecessary.

edit - remove - report - save #2 - by PhotoNeil Aug 9, 2008

Well it's pretty obvious Russia is no longer just 'peacekeeping'. Look at the bullet holes in the apartment building - russian jets are bombing and strafing civilians.

War crimes. Disgusting behaviour.

Russia is now no better than the US.

"Amazing"? No. Horrifying? Yes.

It could happen here...in California. American's just aren't prepared.

edit - remove - report - save #7 - by Anonymous Aug 9, 2008

The problem here is pride. Saakashvili fell for the NATO crap and decided to go on a George W. Bush style military adventure. He didn't expect Russia to finally put its foot down.

@ 2 & 4

Has anyone actually read the news articles on who attacked who? And, who bombed who?

WAR sucks

edit - remove - report - save #12 - by Anonymous Aug 10, 2008

This is the story so far...
- Georgia has training exercises with US troops.
- Georgia increases arms purchases from the west
- Georgia attacks South Osetta which has expressed desire to claim independence from Georgia
- US & other key western allies help reject a Russian plea to UN to get both sides to halt hostilities.
- In the meantime US naval armada is heading for Iran.

Is this all a well-planned distraction for something bigger?

edit - remove - report - save #13 - by Anonymous Aug 10, 2008

Georgia brought it on their own people, they aren't the victims here South Ossetia is.

Umm, you ARE aware of what is actually happening in Iraq, right? Coming from someone who was actually there for some time, allow me to enlighten you: We dropped bombs on plenty of civilian targets. Of course, we neither count or report "collateral damage". How is that for reality?

edit - remove - report - save #15 - by Anonymous Aug 10, 2008

russians always wanted war and dreamed to increase world's opinion about it.... such a awful and stupid country russia is.

edit - remove - report - save #16 - by Anonymous Aug 10, 2008

Nobody wants war. Just take a look at our own sorry country: the American people don't want war so much that we forget that we're even in one. Nobody ever wants war, but you know when you've got only one option left because everyone that you asked for help from ignores you, and you want to help people be free, what would you do? This is like the opposite of the Iraq war, the Russian people ask the world to step in and get the cold shoulder. Us, the great American people, we go in guns blazing, and screw the rest of the world well except, of course, the "Coalition of the Willing?" Ha ha. I think it's funny to watch people bickering about all this here when it's not even our concern. I don't suppose any of you read the Russian news? They all think we're arrogant assholes for wanting our say in the matter. Now, after we just sat back and watched it all fall into this mess. "such a awful and stupid country russia is" Really now people? I mean really? We're one to talk, come on.

Now now, I know even what you're going to say, so don't bother: the Russian government doesn't control the media. And whatever you “America number one” patriot loving people from Bush country out there think, Russians are not stupid, it would just be a waste of time to try and control the media when more than 1/4 of the people there have regular access to the internet. And that’s uncensored internet access, I know China can’t say that much, and what do they get for it? The Olympics…

I saw a headline online as I went looking for more reliable information on this and I came across "McCain, Obama step up criticism of Russia over Georgia." At least the people of this great country will stand together in their hatred of the Russian people. That's just something that I'll never understand, I mean what did they ever do to us even?

edit - remove - report - save #17 - by Anonymous Aug 10, 2008

I think if I took the time to read about the war, and why its happening, I'd waste my time making people around me feel ignorant and hopefully start to care. There's nothing they or I can do for now that will stop war, but will give you this message:
You choose to fight.

Fuck all who said fuck Russians, I am Russian and I am proud of it.

We did not start it we did not shooot any Georians and was planning to do it until thet started shooting civilians in South Osetia because they did not want to be under Georgians and have never been under ... and Georgians forces started shooting small our units from the tanks from the genoside that happened there in 90 ........

We did want any battles and always tried to negotiate and if someone is thinking that he is cool to kill Russians ..we always are paying back and as you know from the history we are paying back heavily..always ...

Why they are not puting here the images of 1700 South Osetian's civilians killed by Georgian troops in 2 days ...where are those pics ..??

We do not hate Georgians ...I respect them ..but if some in their Goverment are not friend with his brain ... all are suffer ..Georgians ..Russian ...Osetians ...

But again fuck all who said fuck Russians

Who started the war ( Georgia ) ..is getting the fruits of war ...

We do not need this war ...all wars are sucks ...

This is a complex and intricate situation with too much national pride involved on both sides.

However, Georgia did make the first military move and how could Russia just sit back and watch its citizens, yes their citizens, passport holders of Russia, be subjected to this invasion.

There is too much interference by Americans here in training Georgians military and openly talking about joining NATO right under the noses of the Russians as if to antagonise them. Its getting to the point that I would trust the Russians more than the intentions of the US government these days.

This fighting is going to continue forever. These countries can/should use diplomatic routes. If that does not work we as soldiers should bear the burden of this war on a battlefield and not have to watch cities ripped apart in the name of humanity

Killing Civilians is terrorism. Russia is doing it now and Georgia assisted in doing it in Iraq.

Both are guilty of war crimes.

This kind of sh*t has been going on since the beginning of man. The only difference now is we have TV and internet showing us these images daily. This isn't the first time and it's not going to be the last. Face it people, it's in our nature to be so distructive.

edit - remove - report - save #34 - by Anonymous Aug 12, 2008

First off I would like to tell all the euroweenies ..if it wasn't for the US your ass would be Russians.Next...Russia is just using the reason of protecting South Osetia to reclaim areas that they think is still theirs from the former Soviet block.Next will be the Ukrain..and so on and so forth.Europe and the US must stop them. This will only turn more and more ugly the longer we wait.

edit - remove - report - save #35 - by Anonymous Aug 12, 2008

War is very very stupid and unnecessary. The Bush doctrine has spread all over the world, and the worst part is that now the most powerful contries are copying what the U.S. has done for the last 7+ years. Force and violence solve nothing, except in extreme situations. This was enormously disproportionate, just like what the U.S. and Israel do with their bombs.

The more you look at the destructive capability mentally of the Russians it makes you wonder. We complain about tax dollars going to our government. I know we spend ten times more then anybody when it comes to our american military, but I say this look what we are up against. The hatred that so many have and the jealousy. I am a middle class American but the hell with it keep taking our tax dollars and build the strongest possible defense against these Communist and Rogue terrorist nations. I need to know that we will take the fight to them and not have to deal with thee fanatics. I am not nieve to think we dont kill civilians in war but I do know we do allot to avoid it. God bless America and please protect us from the fanatics.

The More I hear it the more pissed I get. They dare accuse us of picking on weak military's "ruck you" I wish at times there was no nuclear weapons around just so we can showcase our might against those Russians. I get pissed cause they are really fooled in believing they got a chance but the only chance is there nuclear arsenal . Even though we have em to I would not want to see that obviously. Mother Russia my balls . I have nothing against there people but come on use your heads just look how we live in America and wouldnt you want that for your children .The way your goverment works is not working . You need dramatic change people . Wouldnt be nice If we could all go anywhere we wanted without thinking of , well its to dangerous here and there. Come on get it together Russians or your gonna loose out on your kids futures of living a free life without watching over your shoulders on what you say or wouldnt you just love to give it a chance. Sorry about the previous comment about fighting Russia without nuclear weapons but it just gets a little aggravating cause they seriously think its the old Stalin days, where you can go into any other country and take control of there democratic goverments. Remember its the people making decisions on who is going to run there country and trust me thats the best way. God bless us all and the Russian people not there goverment.

its simple: its not people of any country who dicides war.. or want imperialism...
they are happy earning money, watching tv, living life till we get old and die..
its the as_hole politicians who force war and make all suffer..
does anyone have surity about georgians attack over south ossetia? or its just a hoax!!

Stalin gave Ossetia to the Georgians, so now the West fignts to enforce Stalin's order. That's backwards. Give the Ossetians their freedom from Stalin's order just like Stalin's other victims got.

Georgia started this war in a sneak attack timed to the start of the Olympics. Curse them for that. This ugly war happened because the West ignored the prior war in which many thousands died, that ended in 1992 with Georgia agreeing not to take South Ossetia by force and Russia guaranteeing that if they did they would intervene militarily. It was both stupid and evil for Saakashvilli to break those 1992 accords that kept peace in the region and launch hot war again. It was doubly stupid for him to think that Russia, already itching for an excuse to slap Georgia, would not leap at the convenience of them being *required* to act militarily under the 1992 agreement guaranteeing South Ossetian self-rule.

The way forward from here does not start by pretending that prior peace agreements meant nothing and that Georgia's commitment not to use force on South Ossetia didn't matter. If that's your spin, why should anyone believe any Georgian commitment not to use force this next time around?
