Georgia's parliament Saturday approved a request by President Mikhail Saakashvili's to impose a "state of war," as the conflict between Georgia and Russia escalated, Georgian officials said.
Georgian reservists prepare ammunition before going to front line in the northern Georgian town of Gori.
A burning appartment building, damaged by a Russian airstrike is seen the northern Georgian town of Gori.
Saakashvili accused Russia of launching an unprovoked full-scale military attack against his country, including targeting civilian homes, while Russian officials insist their troops were protecting people from Georgia's attacks on South Ossetia, a breakaway Georgian region that borders Russia.
Russia's Interfax news agency said the death toll was at least 2,000 killed in the capital of South Ossetia and claimed the city has been destroyed.
Separatist-backed South Ossetian sources reported that about 1,600 people have died and 90 have been wounded in provincial capital Tskhinvali since Russian forces entered the territory Thursday.

War crimes. Disgusting behaviour.
Russia is now no better than the US.
Has anyone actually read the news articles on who attacked who? And, who bombed who?
What a stupid comment.
- Georgia has training exercises with US troops.
- Georgia increases arms purchases from the west
- Georgia attacks South Osetta which has expressed desire to claim independence from Georgia
- US & other key western allies help reject a Russian plea to UN to get both sides to halt hostilities.
- In the meantime US naval armada is heading for Iran.
Is this all a well-planned distraction for something bigger?
Umm, you ARE aware of what is actually happening in Iraq, right? Coming from someone who was actually there for some time, allow me to enlighten you: We dropped bombs on plenty of civilian targets. Of course, we neither count or report "collateral damage". How is that for reality?
Now now, I know even what you're going to say, so don't bother: the Russian government doesn't control the media. And whatever you “America number one” patriot loving people from Bush country out there think, Russians are not stupid, it would just be a waste of time to try and control the media when more than 1/4 of the people there have regular access to the internet. And that’s uncensored internet access, I know China can’t say that much, and what do they get for it? The Olympics…
I saw a headline online as I went looking for more reliable information on this and I came across "McCain, Obama step up criticism of Russia over Georgia." At least the people of this great country will stand together in their hatred of the Russian people. That's just something that I'll never understand, I mean what did they ever do to us even?
You choose to fight.
We did not start it we did not shooot any Georians and was planning to do it until thet started shooting civilians in South Osetia because they did not want to be under Georgians and have never been under ... and Georgians forces started shooting small our units from the tanks from the genoside that happened there in 90 ........
We did want any battles and always tried to negotiate and if someone is thinking that he is cool to kill Russians ..we always are paying back and as you know from the history we are paying back heavily..always ...
Why they are not puting here the images of 1700 South Osetian's civilians killed by Georgian troops in 2 days ...where are those pics ..??
We do not hate Georgians ...I respect them ..but if some in their Goverment are not friend with his brain ... all are suffer ..Georgians ..Russian ...Osetians ...
But again fuck all who said fuck Russians
Who started the war ( Georgia ) ..is getting the fruits of war ...
We do not need this war ...all wars are sucks ...

However, Georgia did make the first military move and how could Russia just sit back and watch its citizens, yes their citizens, passport holders of Russia, be subjected to this invasion.
There is too much interference by Americans here in training Georgians military and openly talking about joining NATO right under the noses of the Russians as if to antagonise them. Its getting to the point that I would trust the Russians more than the intentions of the US government these days.
Both are guilty of war crimes.
Peace will never bring an end to war, only more war over peace. Ask yourself what it is to trully be human, what it is to truly be foulable.
You clowns used Ossetian proxies to attack Georgians and then when they defend themselves you accuse them of starting it. Pull your head out of your borscht hole you Stalinist stooge!
they are happy earning money, watching tv, living life till we get old and die..
its the as_hole politicians who force war and make all suffer..
does anyone have surity about georgians attack over south ossetia? or its just a hoax!!
-shashank frm india
so obvious they wont know wt hit them
Georgia started this war in a sneak attack timed to the start of the Olympics. Curse them for that. This ugly war happened because the West ignored the prior war in which many thousands died, that ended in 1992 with Georgia agreeing not to take South Ossetia by force and Russia guaranteeing that if they did they would intervene militarily. It was both stupid and evil for Saakashvilli to break those 1992 accords that kept peace in the region and launch hot war again. It was doubly stupid for him to think that Russia, already itching for an excuse to slap Georgia, would not leap at the convenience of them being *required* to act militarily under the 1992 agreement guaranteeing South Ossetian self-rule.
The way forward from here does not start by pretending that prior peace agreements meant nothing and that Georgia's commitment not to use force on South Ossetia didn't matter. If that's your spin, why should anyone believe any Georgian commitment not to use force this next time around?
i would just like to back it up for a second here
and take notice to something else horrible going on here.
whats with the spelling people?
