The best part is when you actually go down the street a little to look for different views. 2 clicks to the left, suddenly it's sunny, no LARPers, and there's bushes where the larpers are. A few clicks to the right and then either way down the dead end street, and the same thing happens. Also, from one of the views, you see the guy on the left is on the ground and the other one is standing over him. But what is most interesting is it looks like the google streetcam was only there that rainy day for a span of about 20 meters... the rest of the neighborhood was shot on a sunny day. Maybe they saw the LARPers on their first run, and made a second run much later on a nicer day, but left the LARPers in?
it was actually planned... And if you continued to check out the street view on Sampsonia Way you will see some other... strange things going on! :) http://kelsocartography.com/blog/?tag=pittsburgh
these guys seem to be playing either Belegarth or Dagorhir, judging by their get-ups and weapons...
There are other games out there a lot like this one
Amtgard - the best of the boffer games
Dag/Bel - Lots of fun
NERO - Gay
SCA - Fun, but not cheap
Darkon - no review exist
Melee - Ok on occasion
there are others, but i dont know of them/cant remember them now.
At a park near my house, a bunch of kids wearing this stuff gather and have what appears to be tournaments. The first time I saw it I thought I was either going crazy or had driven through a wormhole and gone back in time.
You can count on ALL the strangest news to come from Pennsylvania. I work up there some and every week they make the news in some criminally or mentally retarded way
they are not SCA or Belagarth. They are Dagorhir. And the one on the left is my friend. Im not sure who the one on the right is. I cant tell. And it is NOT LARPing.
At the end of the street by the corner cafe, there's a person with a postbox suit kind of thing that looks like a bottle that says HAM on it, it seems (!?), that cannot be any kind of game (like, "hey lets dress up as post boxes today and play postbox-postbox") It is definitely LARPing
"Role Models" was soooo funnny. Quote from the movie: Do you know what I had for breakfast? Cocaine! Do you know what I had for lunch? Cocaine! What did you have for dinner? Was it cocaine? ROFLOL!!
Most of you are totally missing the point here...it's the fact that it's on Google streetview that is funny. These guys happened to be fighting with foam swords when the streetview car came and took pictures, and now they are immortalized on the intertewbez.
this is on Samsonia way in Pittsburgh, there were different sets up all along the street.. like a marathon, a laboratory, band practice, a giant chicken, a marching band, and the folks at The Mattress Factory throwing confetti (just to name a few things).
It's most likely Dagorhir, since that's what's most popular around here in Pittsburgh, and I know a lot of people from around that area that participate. It sort of makes me wonder if this was part of the Sampsonia Way art installation or they just showed up because they knew about it.
if you map it, than go down the road until the intersection you can you can see one of them laying on the ground...you have to zoom a little to see, but i guess the other guy kicked his ass lmfao good find
good one
how did you spot the camera van?
luck or planned rendezvous?
great idea
all i could think of was holding a card with "eternity' or "love one another"
it's not LARPing although there are some elements of LARP in the game this is actually called AMTGARD
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amtgard
I play it myself in Columbus Ohoi where there are 4 parks (mine is a barony meaning at least 20 ppl show up on a regular basis)
promo video someone made:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOnjWHW5hjw
http://www.amtgardatlas.com/ohio.php Mine is Barony of the Blackshire Pass we meet every Sunday starting at 11 going until whenever. weapons are made by us and of Fun noodle wrapped around sawed off golf clubs, PVC pipe, bamboo (whatever as long as it doesn't poke through)
Me and my gang playing it up:
http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewPicture&friendID=40445795&albumId=1638220
Yes there are chicks that go :D
If it sounds/looks fun hit me up (if you know how)
Just want to point out something to those of ypu who like to insult LARPERS. These 'fags' know how to use weapons and train with them on a oftern daily basis. Do you really think its a good idea to insult some one who can not only block what ever you throw at them but then drum roll you till you cry like a baby. Think about it, we like beating the living crap out of each other. We only use foam ones cause after about the fifth trip, the ER not only begins to get really boring but the staff tend to start reporting you to the cops (or just cart your best mate off to mental ward for being a violent psycho.) Either way where's the intelligence in insulting some one who sword trains for fun. (oh and about 70% of LARPERS own real weapons too, might not be tempered or sharpened to stay on the right side of the law but a couple of kilo's of metal swung by someone who knows what they doing is at best very very painful and at worst, fatal.) This is why we tend to be quite peaceful types in real life, who needs to be a loud mouth when you know you can give any cop, basic grunt or low level martial artist a real run for their money. Oh and a hint to other LARPER's, learn martial arts during the week. not only does does your fitness improve (allowing you to hit your mates for longer) but so do your skills.
no yall are idiots a google car was driving around taking pictures for google maps and these two nerds happened to be playing with themselves at the right time and are now forever imprinted on google maps history
Did anyone else notice that on Fireman St, right off of Sampsonia there are 2 firemen rescuing a cat from a tree for a little girl? What a fun idea those people had! The rest of you debating LARP and photoshopping are just freaks.
This is interesting... go to the where Sampsonia way meets Arch street, next to a store that says "Butcher Grocer"... there is a person standing outside who appears to be auditioning for a role as "Mr Peanut". What is this person wearing?
That is part of the Sampsonia art installation on Google maps. Google and the neighborhood teamed up and that's why there's a lot of out of the ordinary scenes in the neighborhood. It's pretty awesome
if I couldn't see that it was Pennsylvania and if it wasn't for the American stile fire escape which I think you only get in Manchester (UK) I would swear that this was my hole town. me ans some friends used to to a few practice fights near a pub and I know that people LARPing in other places too. the fact that this is happening isn't strange ..... but that there in full costume is... those weapons look rubbish too lol I hope its just a low camera resolution or something
it looks like F and H
anybody else notice that if you go to Google maps to look at this, go a few blocks west to the corner of Arch and Sampsonia, while facing west, what the fluck is that thing on the left hand side of the road? A person in a barrel?
Dagohir players must be really insecure if they get pissed when you call them LARPers. Do they prefer "Live Action Combat Gaming" because it sounds manlier?
Hahahaha. LARP FTW. I'd like to appear on a googlemap street view. As long as I wasn't entering a porn shop or getting a BJ from a tranny hooker on L Street, that is.
Google Maps seems to have been edited. All the surrounding views are dry, in sunshine, but that one little block with the guys on is overcast and wet. Seems to have been bolted on instead of the original view.
Check out the sky view for rain, dead leaves and bird droppings on the glass roof.
If you googlemap this street, there is a bunch of stuff like this going on, including a marching band, a brown's fan hugging a steeler's fan, and mad scientists.
"Check out the Society for Creative Anachronism. It is likely that these two are members and just practicing."
The SCA uses rattans, pieces of bamboo tied together. They also usually wear real armor to fight, and are required to wear helmets. Broken bones are not unheard of in the SCA.
No, these are ordinary LARPers. Not exceptionally skilled ones either, the one on the left has a terrible stance and could be picked apart in seconds.
The whole thing was staged. If any of you cretins knew how to use something called 'Google' you might have found this: http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/08317/927167-53.stm
so any of u have to go to 18830 may road on google maps ... watch all the road and u will see some thing there ... hehehe. thank u if u go to www.youmusicholly.synthasite.com is free ...thak u for read this
Its google maps. They drive around in vans to make the street view option for google maps. they just happen to catch this and if you were to go to google maps and search this street you would see these two people playing with swords.
You forgot to then post a list of YOUR services and how much they cost. Taking me to the mall $5 Washing kid's clothes and sorting them $5 (having to pick them up off the floor, $35. Listening to whining for 10 minutes $30. Doing the grocery shopping each week, $20. Cooking for the family, $85. And so on. Then let them take over a task so they don't have to pay you.
Yes, anybody who 'LARPS' and thinks that they "can give any cop, basic grunt or low level martial artist a real run for their money" is way too deep into their imaginary realm for their own good. Terms 'basic grunt' and 'low level' just compound the hilarity of this photo and following comments. Really, did you think that wasting time in an imaginary world for extended periods of time, and then swinging a foam sword would enable you to 'give any cop, basic grunt or low level martial artist a real run for their money'? No chance. Ha ha, throw a frisbee, or maybe talk to a female who doesnt look like she has spent the last year underground.
If you think they are LARPing you obviously don't know your geeks... LARPers are creepy wimps who tap each other and yell things like lighting bolt or some such thing... these guys are doing something call Dagorhir, they build PVC weapons and cover them in foam, then they stage fights with rules for hits and kills... you can really beat the heck out of each other... learn your geeks or shut up!
These guys are from the local Pittsburgh Chapter of Dagorhir (www.dagorhir.com) called Angaron (www.angaron.org). It is a medieval combat group that uses foam padded weapons to fight full out combat.
on google maps, go up a little farther on the street, towards the guy on the bike and into charlik way...and you'll see them stop and stare at the camara like they know what has just happened and where they'll end up.
If you search that adress on google maps, and go down to level and have a look
there's also a view where they've got their swords down and are starring at the camera hahaa
The "UFO's" are confetti stuck to the roof mounted camera and left over from driving by the mattress factory where they threw it out as the car drove by...the person that posted this http://kelsocartography.com/blog/?tag=pittsburgh earlier had it right...
LARPs in general have a strict ruling of not acting out combat, even with boffer or costume weapons. Seems more like people just having fun or practicing for SCA. Still, maybe they're just hardcore LARPers who don't follow the rules, but if they are they have a mighty small gaming group, lol.
When I was a kid (10 or 11), one of the girls at school had full boffer sets for two people that her dad made. He used to let the kids in the neighborhood have tourneys on the weekends. Small town fun. lol
For those of you who STILL don't understand, this is an actual snapshot of the place specified on Google map. As in, if you were to type in that exact location and go to "pedestrian" mode, you would actually see this on Google maps.
No, it's NOT Larping you dorks! Ok, it is, but done specifically for googlemaps. They are ACTORS/ARTISTS doing an art project called "Street With A View" Go here for the story - http://www.streetwithaview.com/
I live in Pittsburgh and I know what this is all about. Google worked with a local theater group to stage performance art all along Sampsonia Way. If you go up and down the street, you will see al kinds of strange things.
