There is no reason for the use of mobile/cell phones to be banned at pumps. The original fear was that radio signals could ignite the fuel, however for the last twenty years fuel pumps themselves have used crude radio transmitters to communicate with the cashier.

In 2007, it was generally acknowledged in the UK that it was OK to use a mobile phone near a fuel pump or tank.

Ok, so everybody is the expert on risks and can choose the rules he wishes to obey. I guess the world would be a funny place if everybody did that. Someone says it's not like he's mugging someone.
